Choosing A Cross Trainer

Cross Trainers or as some people like to call them Ellipticals are the most recent fitness machines compared to treadmills, bikes and rowers,  they have been around for a few years now and have been designed with the action of a treadmill and a stepper combined. The motion of using a cross trainer is low impact compared to using a treadmill, and works the same muscles as you would using a treadmill or a stepping machine. and often they are chosen because of noise reduction, whereas running on a treadmill would be louder than using a crosstrainer where the noise level is very low.

There are a few different types of cross trainers. A front wheel drive, a rear wheel drive and a central drive.  The difference being a front wheel drive may seem more like working out on a stair climber as you tend to lean forwards and is easier for getting on and off as the wheel is at the front of the machine. A rear wheel drive has an elliptical stride which feels like you are jogging or walking and you tend to be better centred on rear wheel drive ellipticals, a central drive cross trainer means you stand more upright on the machine, so you are not leaning on the handrails thus you will work harder burning more calories, but it is entirely the users preference. The central drive is a more upright machine, making it more compact, taking up less space.

For a front or rear wheel cross trainer, a minimum of 18” is always a good stride length and for taller users you would want a 20” stride length. The heavier the flywheel the better as this will give you a smoother more natural motion thus giving you a smoother workout. The more you weigh, the more important it is to get a solid machine as you will enjoy using it more.  Stability is very important, so buy a machine with a good sturdy base.

The benefits of using a cross trainer are:

* It provides a similar cardio workout as a treadmill but with less impact on your joints

* You can get a great cardio workout and burn calories

* You can build and strengthen your lower legs, as well as tone your arms, making this a good choice for a full body exercise machine.

Most cross trainers have a monitor showing programmes and feedback, most modern models have audio connection and some have app downloads, giving you more choices of programmes to follow and making your workout more entertaining. Most people like to just workout for 30 minutes to their favourite music tracks and are happy with a quality smooth ride.

We always recommend that when choosing a fitness machine, don't just choose one because of price, try and budget that little bit more if you can, as you will be glad you did in the long run. Choosing a sturdy, quality machine will make you want to use it more, if it feels right then you will want to use it and reap the benefits. We offer 0% credit on most fitness machines so you can choose a quality model and spread the payments.
